The Fundraising Team, Sands | 21 August 2019

In August 2019 Kate did a Skydive for Sands with her sister Emma, her sister's partner James and their friend James. They have raised an incredible £2700 (plus Gift Aid) so far as a team which is amazing and we are just so grateful! We asked Kate why she decided to Skydive for Sands...

How and when did you become aware of Sands?

In 2012 I became aware of Sands after my daughter, Evie was stillborn on 1st August 2012. Sands provided the memory box to the hospital, this is such a treasured item as it enabled us to capture precious memories of our daughter including hand and foot prints. The hospital also gave us leaflets outlining the support Sands provides. My husband and I attended the Bath Sands support group, and our connection with the group started from there.

What made you decide to fundraise for Sands?

I have always been so grateful for Sands for their support and wanted to do something to thank them and help them continue their amazing work. When I told my sister what I planned to do, she was so shocked - but a few minutes later asked if she could join me. I was grateful of the support - so said yes immediately! Then my sisters partner and another friend heard about the skydive and asked to join as well - and I ended up with a team!

Why did you choose a Skydive?

My husband ran the Bath Half Marathon in 2013 to raise money for Sands. I wanted to do something different and out of my comfort zone - and jumping out of a plane fitted the bill!

Did you enjoy the Skydive?

Yes I did! I chose something out of my comfort zone, and I have to be honest - I was a little terrified! However, the team and Go Skydive were fantastic and put me at ease straight away with our induction and training so I knew what to expect.

The Skydive was an amazing and exhilarating experience. The sense of achievement once I had landed was huge!

What was your favourite part of it?

I will never forget the feeling when the parachute opened and we were gliding through the sky, through clouds and over the beautiful countryside below me.

How did you find the fundraising?

I found the process of fundraising really straight forward. Sands helped a lot with this, providing links and tips. they were also on hand to provide any merchandise and sponsorship forms should we have needed them. I was overwhelmed by the support of my friends and family and it was a great feeling to reach the fundraising target, our final total as a team is £2,700 (plus gift aid).

Would you do it again?

Yes, it was an amazing experience!

If you could say one thing to someone who was thinking of doing a Skydive for Sands, what would you say?

Just do it! I never ever thought I’d be capable of doing something like this- but I was and I’m so pleased I did.
