It’s better to let it go on its own, they say; for you, for your body

There’s pills for that, the old ones say

The second day it comes, nature’s cruellest trick

You thought you were someone, it says

That you mattered.  This will teach you not to trust, never to believe

I have no tears, they’ve all been cried and so I howl

Sinews taut as wire, throat dry

But my body weeps

I watch the moon-cast tears fall from their swollen source

Eddying along my aching, vacant belly

The futile course of the unwanted gift.
