Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has today announced plans to create more than 3,000 places on midwifery training courses over the next four years.
We welcome this announcement, and view it as key to helping to meet the Government’s ambition to halve the rate of stillbirth by 2025.
Dr Clea Harmer, Chief Executive of Sands, said: "The health secretary's pledge to train 3,000 more midwives, and crucially to give mums the care they need, is very welcome. We know that continuity of carer is essential to improve safety and save babies' lives. I hope this investment makes a significant difference to maternity care."
It is vital that any new maternity staff have the training and resources to ensure parents receive the care they need when a baby dies. To this end, we run a nationwide training programme for midwives and other professionals to ensure they have the skills needed to support bereaved parents.
We are also working with other charities, organisations and NHS England to implement a National Bereavement Care Pathway to improve the overall quality of bereavement care and end the postcode lottery facing bereaved parents and families. Wave 2 of this project is due to launch in April 2018.
