Sands volunteers work across the country to support bereaved parents and improve the care they receive when a baby dies.

Bristol Sands Arnos Vale Project
Arnos Vale Cemetery is a Victorian cemetery in Bristol, and is undergoing significant restoration after being left derelict for many years. The cemetery has a stillbirth section but sadly graves remain unmarked. While many of the babies have been buried a very long time ago, some babies were still buried there as late as the 1970s. Their parents and families do not have a space to visit, nor a place to reflect.
Bristol Sands are supporting this restoration and wish to improve the stillbirth section by erecting a stone marker or monument in memory of all babies buried there. This will create a calm, respectful space for long ago bereaved parents to remember their babies in peace, offering much needed bereavement support.
#TeamSands-Bristol are absolutely committed to raising the money needed for this really important project. You'll see our team fundraising target on the right. Your kind donation, however small, can really help and will make such a difference to the lives of the families of the babies buried at Arnos Vale, thank you so much.
All funds raised on this page or #TeamSands-Bristol team pages linked to it, will all be jointly supporting activities linked to the core charitable aims of Sands.
All the funds raised will be designated for the purpose of Bristol Sands Arnos Vale Project. Once this project is fully funded and it’s £5,000 target reached, any excess will be spent where the need is greatest, helping Sands to continue to deliver its vital services to support anyone affected by the death of a baby, to improve the bereavement care received by parents and families, and to promote research to reduce the number of babies dying.
Aberdeen Sands Baird Family Hospital Bereavement Suite Project
The Baird Family Hospital is a planned new hospital in Aberdeen, for the Grampian area, which will include Maternity, Infertility, Neonatal, Breast Screening and Surgery.
Aberdeen Sands have been involved in ensuring that bereaved parents are cared for in the Rubislaw Ward in the current hospital. To support bereaved parents in future we have been involved in the planning and designing of a new bereavement suite, to make it as comfortable and appropriate as possible for those facing the loss of a baby.
The bereavement suite will be a separate part of the maternity ward, tucked away from the hustle and bustle, sound proofed, and with direct access to the car park. It will have two en suite rooms, a separate family room, and a multipurpose room also required for clinical reasons. Losses from 16 weeks gestation and onwards will be cared for in this new suite.
Isle of Wight Sands St Mary's Hospital Project
St Mary’s Hospital on the Isle of Wight is the only hospital on the island. We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated bereavement room there. Families use this room to give birth and spend time with their baby afterwards, providing a calm, safe environment. Now, the room needs some gentle care and refurbishment itself. Isle of Wight Sands is supporting this refurbishment and wish to purchase some key items to make the stay of any family in this bereavement room as comfortable as possible. This will include a new double rather than single bed, nice bedding, appropriate and comfortable furniture, a new radio, toiletries and a discrete sign for the door. The area outside the room will benefit from a screen for added privacy when in use.
West Berkshire Sands Thatcham Cemetery Memorial Garden Project
West Berkshire Sands are fundraising to have a Baby Memorial Garden within Thatcham Cemetery. They have been given authorisation from the council for the space they require within the baby section of the Cemetery. Now they need to fundraise to make this much needed memorial garden a reality within West Berkshire, so that all bereaved families can come and quietly reflect in the comfort of a peaceful and beautiful setting. This memorial garden will also be where West Berkshire Sands hold baby loss awareness events throughout the year.
The dedication of Sands groups across the UK enables us to provide local support to thousands of families across the UK. Where possible, we will ensure your money is used locally and supports your chosen Sands Group and project. When projects are fully funded we will direct your money where the need is greatest.
Local action can only take us so far, and by donating directly to Sands, you will enable us to get funding to where it is most needed right now and help us to achieve our key commitments for 2020.
