Following two years of work behind the scenes, Sands has today launched a new ‘post mortem consent package’ for health professionals, and bereaved parents following the death of their baby.
The package has been specifically designed to make it easier for health professionals and parents to discuss the difficult topic of a post mortem and to ensure that parents can make an informed choice as to whether to have a post mortem examination of their baby.
It is hoped that the package may also increase the number of parents consenting to a post mortem, which is currently low in the UK, following the death of their baby, and to help facilitate much-needed research into stillbirth and neonatal death.

The Independent on Sunday ran an in-depth news story yesterday about the package, which can be viewed here.
