A 5,000-mile round-Britain journey finished where it started six months ago, as a Suffolk grandmother rode into her home town of Aldeburgh, Suffolk on Saturday 5 September to the cheers of waiting crowds.
Maggie Scorer set off in March on her ‘Dog on tour’ cycling challenge around the British coast with her faithful companion, golden retriever Oscar, in tow.
Six months, a fantastic adventure, and an incredible achievement later, Maggie and Oscar are set to raise £25,000 for Sands and Bloodwise (formerly known as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research).
A bagpiper led the pair to the finish line to cheers from a large crowd of family, friends and local supporters, including Julie Baker, Sands’ Supporter Care Officer, with Maggie’s grandchildren cycling alongside.
Maggie has been nominated for a Pride of Britain award in recognition of her Dog on Tour challenge.
Maggie Scorer said, “It has been an incredible journey of highs and lows, funny and tough times, and so many new places and new faces. It’s been a huge physical, mental and psychological challenge, but a life-changing, spiritual experience too. Oscar and I would like to thank everyone for their support - in planning the challenge and all along the way. You have been amazing and kept up my motivation when my legs ached or hiding from the rain under my duvet seemed a far better idea!”
Carolyn Bray, Fundraising and Events Manager at Sands, said, “What an achievement! We are in awe of Maggie and Oscar for completing this incredible challenge, and can’t thank them - or the generosity of everyone who supported them en route - enough for their support and for the invaluable funds and awareness they have raised. Congratulations Maggie and Oscar, and welcome home!”
