Sands could be in line for a funding boost of up to £10,000 this winter, after being shortlisted for the ScottishPower Foundation Awards 2023, for our work in supporting bereaved families across the UK.
We’re honoured to be contenders in three of the four prestigious categories: Community Engagement, Education, and Charity Champion.
Our nomination for the Community Engagement Award celebrates the pivotal role of Sands' Hospital Liaison Volunteer teams. They are instrumental in bridging the gap between bereaved parents and healthcare professionals and ensuring access to Sands' invaluable resources after baby loss.
Our Education Award nomination shines a light on our Bereavement in the Workspace training, which has empowered over 500,000 UK employees, equipping workplaces to compassionately support parents returning after the tragic loss of a baby.
The Charity Champion Award is reserved for those who've gone above and beyond for their cause. Sands proudly nominated Peter Byrom, father to Thomas, who was sadly stillborn in 2004. Drawing from personal experience, Pete co-founded Sands United Football Club in Bristol, offering a haven for men to bond over sport, find support, and openly discuss their grief.
All shortlisted charities have benefited from ScottishPower Foundation's generosity in 2023. Category winners will receive an additional £10,000, with runners-up awarded £5,000.
Since its inception in 2013, the ScottishPower Foundation has generously donated over £12 million to charities. This year, Sands was the proud recipient of a significant £95,000 grant, enabling us to expand our Sands Volunteer Befriender network across the UK. Sands Befrienders are the heart and soul of Sands, offering bereaved families the empathy, compassion, and guidance they so desperately need.
Melanie Hill, Executive Officer, and Trustee at the ScottishPower Foundation said: “As we enter the tenth year of supporting registered charities across the UK, what has become increasingly clear to us is the real-world value of the vital charities that are supporting people and communities across the country. “This year’s shortlisted finalists are inspiring real difference through their work and are cornerstone examples of the positive impact our Foundation funding can make. “I’m looking forward to celebrating the achievements of our finalists – and the ScottishPower Foundation – on Awards Day later this month.”
Rowena Pailing, Head of Bereavement Services at Sands, added, “Being shortlisted by the ScottishPower Foundation is a testament to the relentless efforts of our volunteers, supporters, and staff. Their dedication is making a profound difference in the lives of those affected by pregnancy and baby loss.”
The award winners will be unveiled on the 30th of October.
