Across the UK, we elect representatives as MPs in Westminster and to devolved parliaments in the other UK nations: MSPs in Scotland, MSs in Wales and MLAs in Northern Ireland.
Whether an MP, MSP, MS or MLA, your elected representatives will be responsible for making decisions which impact on you.
In the UK, healthcare is a devolved matter. This means that the national Government are responsible for making policy decisions about healthcare, and pregnancy and baby loss, rather than Westminster.
- If you live in England, this is the UK Parliament.
- If you live in Wales, this is the Welsh Senedd
- If you live in Scotland, this is the Scottish Parliament
- If you live in Northern Ireland, this is the Northern Ireland Assembly.
If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland although healthcare is devolved you can also contact your MP to make them aware of an issue.
Emailing your local representative
In the UK you can ask to meet with your elected representatives or attend a local meeting to discuss issues which are important to you.
We have put together a simple online form where you can enter your postcode and find out who your local representatives are. You can use the form to write to your local representatives about an issue of concern or arrange to meet with them:
Some of the things you can ask your representative to do include:
- Writing to the Government to raise your issue and ask what they are going to do about this.
- Speak in parliament during a debate, raising your concerns or sharing your experiences.
- Ask written parliamentary questions which receive a response from a Government Minister.
- Ask them to support, or even to introduce, a bill to change the current law
- Ask for their support for a local campaign or to write to the local authority, or a hospital, about the issue.
If have any questions or would like some additional support to contact your representative, please contact campaigns@sands.org.uk.
We can help you every step of the way, including support to help you meet with your local representative.
