FAQs
Why is Sands accepting cryptocurrency?
Sands wants to ensure that as a charity we remain sustainable so that now and into the future we can continue to save lives and support those who rely on us for support.
Cryptocurrency is an innovative new kind of currency and we believe that accepting cryptocurrency will result in donations we may not otherwise receive, as well as connecting us with new types of supporters.
Also, looking into future trends, it looks likely that digital currency as a donation and/or as part of a legacy at some point will become a popular way to support charities and we want to be prepared for that eventuality.
What other organisations accept cryptocurrency donations in the UK and Ireland?
Lush, Expedia, RNLI and CHUF UK are a few businesses and charities accepting cryptocurrency as form of payment or donation for their products and services in the UK.
Global charities and companies like Save the Children, The Water Project, Tesla and Microsoft also have the ability to accept cryptocurrency.
Are cryptocurrency donations anonymous?
Yes, they work the same as a cash donation; anyone can send them to us without providing their details. However we have specifically chosen to use The Giving Block to manage and facilitate donations who also allow donors to share their details with Sands.
Is it safe and secure to donate cryptocurrency to Sands?
Yes. We are working with The Giving Block who were founded to support the not for profit sector to set up a crypto exchange account that is fast, easy and most importantly secure.
As with any online transaction you do, you must take care when inputting your data online and have your own personal safety checks in place when share your personal information.
What about money laundering and proceeds of crime legislation?
We have already put in place the necessary safeguards to closely monitor donations, however they’re received. We reserve the right to return any anonymous donation if this is financially significant and is from an unknown source.
