Sands research into making care safer
Sands' work to save babies' lives is underpinned by our mission to improve care for babies and families. Research is an important step in identifying how to make care safer.
Sands supports a range of research studies aiming to save babies' lives, make care safer and improve bereavement care and support for parents and families.

PARENTS studies - engaging families in review
The Sands-funded PARENTS research found that most parents wanted the opportunity to provide information to the review of their baby's death. A follow-on study, PARENTS 2, extended this to work out how families can best be involved in reviews so that lessons are consistently learned.
The UMPIRE study - bereaved parents and hospital review
The UMPIRE study is exploring how bereaved parents are informed about hospital review when their baby is stillborn or dies shortly after birth, and if and how they are given the opportunity to have their views and questions about their care included as part of the review.
The MBRRACE-UK ESMiE confidential enquiry
The MBRRACE-UK ESMiE confidential enquiry examined baby deaths that occurred at full term for births planned in midwifery-led units or at home. It found that 75% of the deaths examined could have been prevented with better care.
