For our Together, we are Sands campaign, we are celebrating the impact of the connections made within and beyond the Sands community.
Thank you to Sandra for sharing her connection to our community – a community unlike any other.
"I first became involved with Sands 17 years ago after losing our precious daughter Beth at 36 weeks gestation. She was our second child and I had had a text book pregnancy so losing her was a shock.
"I made contact with Aberdeen Sands initially by telephone where I talked with a befriender who encouraged me to go along to a meeting. That first meeting was daunting but within minutes I felt reassured and comforted by the fact I was in a room with people who really understood what I was going through.
"I continued attending meetings on a regular basis which provided me with much needed support in helping me come to terms with my loss. I was lucky enough to fall pregnant again and Sands supported me through that pregnancy.
"I was very lucky in that I had a supportive family and friends, but they would never really understand how I was feeling so to be part of a group of people who really understood was invaluable.
"After a year I then joined the committee and trained as a Befriender as I wanted to help others as Sands had helped me. I wanted to do something in memory of my daughter so volunteering for Sands enabled me to do that.
"Over the years I have made so many new friends through Sands, people I have a special connection with and may never have met otherwise."
Read more stories of connections and keep checking for new ones throughout June.
Through all these different experiences, the one connection remains, our precious and loved babies.
